Grade needed on the exam
v1nota_objetivonota_actualpeso_examennota_necesariaHow it is worked out
Work out the grade you need on the remaining exam to reach the final grade you are after.
A final grade is a weighted average: what you already have counts for whatever the exam does not. If you are at 54 and the final is worth 30 %, those 54 carry the other 70 %, so the exam has to cover the gap to the target: 74.
The expression that runs
(nota_objetivo * 100 - nota_actual * (100 - peso_examen)) / peso_examenThe fields arrive with an example filled in: put your own numbers in and run it again. You can also edit the formula to fit your case.
What if the formula were yours?
This calculator is not hand-written: it is an Axioma formula. Open it in the editor to see how it is built, adapt it to your case and create the ones you need.
Where the number comes from
With a target of 60, what you already have contributes 54 times 70 %, which is 37.8 points. Reaching 60 needs another 22.2, and since the exam is worth 30 %, you need 22.2 divided by 0.30: a 74.
All the formula does is solve for that unknown. Enter your grades on whatever scale you use, 0 to 100, 0 to 5 or 0 to 10, and the answer comes back on the same scale, because the proportion does not change.
When the number that comes out is impossible
If the result is above the top of your scale, the target is no longer reachable with that exam: no grade would be enough. And if it comes out negative or very low, you already have the target secured even by handing in a blank page.
Both answers are useful: the first says the goal needs rethinking, and the second tells you how much room you really have to spread effort across subjects.
Weight matters more than difficulty
An exam worth 10 % barely moves the final grade: lifting it by a point would take ten more points on that paper. One worth 50 % moves it twice as fast, in both directions.
So it is worth checking the weight before the difficulty when deciding where the hours go: two extra points on the assessment worth half the grade beats a perfect score on one worth a tenth.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it work with grades from 0 to 5?
- Yes. Enter the target and what you have on your own scale and the answer comes back on the same one. The only figure that has to be a percentage is the weight of the exam.
- What if I have two assessments left?
- Add their weights and treat them as one: the result is the average grade you need across both. Splitting it differently needs another formula, and you can write it in the editor.
- Why does it ask for my grade so far and not each mark?
- Because what enters the final grade is their weighted average. If you already have that figure, this calculation only needs it and the weight of what is left.
