How it is worked out

Work out what percentage one amount is of another, such as how much 37,500 is of 250,000: 15 %.

A percentage says how many parts in every hundred an amount represents. To find it, divide the part by the whole and multiply by a hundred: 37,500 out of 250,000 is 0.15 of the whole, that is, 15 %. It is the reverse of working out a percentage of an amount.

The expression that runs

parte / total * 100

The fields arrive with an example filled in: put your own numbers in and run it again. You can also edit the formula to fit your case.

What if the formula were yours?

This calculator is not hand-written: it is an Axioma formula. Open it in the editor to see how it is built, adapt it to your case and create the ones you need.

Step by step, with 37,500 out of 250,000

First divide the part by the whole: 37,500 over 250,000 gives 0.15. That number says what fraction of the whole the part is, and it already is the answer, only expressed out of one instead of out of a hundred.

Multiplying by a hundred turns it into a percentage: 0.15 is 15 parts in every 100, or 15 %. To check it, walk back: 15 % of 250,000 is 250,000 times 0.15, which gives 37,500 again.

Which number is the part and which the whole

The only possible mistake is the order. The whole always goes underneath: it is the reference, the amount that counts as 100 %. Swap them and 250,000 over 37,500 times a hundred gives 666.67 %, which answers a different question: how big the whole is next to the part.

The part can be larger than the whole, and then the result goes past 100 %. If 300 units were sold in a month against a target of 250, the target was met at 120 %. That is not a mistake in the arithmetic: it says the reference was beaten.

What turning it into a percentage is for

To see what slice of a salary goes on rent, how much of an exam was answered correctly or how much of a budget has already been spent. Every case has a reference amount and a part of it, and the percentage puts them on a scale that can be compared.

That is the point of it: 37,500 out of 250,000 and 150 out of 1,000 are very different amounts, yet both are 15 %. Moving to percentages lets you compare proportions even when the totals look nothing alike.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a test score as a percentage?
Divide the correct answers by the total number of questions and multiply by a hundred. With 42 right out of 50, that is 42 over 50 times 100, or 84 %. The part is the correct answers and the whole is every question.
How is this different from percentage change?
Here a part is compared with its whole, and the result says how much it makes up. Percentage change compares two values of the same thing at different times, and says how much it rose or fell. A price going from 200 to 250 rose 25 %; 50 out of 250 is 20 %.
Can the result be more than 100 %?
Yes, when the part is larger than the reference. It is common when measuring targets: selling 300 units against a target of 250 is 120 % of the target. A hundred percent is the reference, not a ceiling.
