Percentage of a number
v1valorporcentajeparteHow it is worked out
Work out what a percentage of an amount comes to, such as 15 % of 250,000.
A percentage is a fraction over a hundred: 15 % is fifteen hundredths. So the amount is multiplied by the percentage and divided by a hundred. Fifteen per cent of 250,000 is 37,500.

What if the formula were yours?
This calculator is not hand-written: it is an Axioma formula. Open it in the editor to see how it is built, adapt it to your case and create the ones you need.
How it is worked out, and how to do it in your head
The arithmetic is multiply by the percentage and divide by a hundred: 250,000 times 15 is 3,750,000, and over a hundred that is 37,500. The order does not matter: dividing by a hundred first gives 2,500, which is 1 %, and multiplying that by fifteen lands in the same place.
That shortcut is the one that works without a calculator: find 1 % by moving the decimal point two places and multiply it by whatever you need. Ten per cent is moving the point one place, and 5 % is half of that.
A percentage of something is not a percentage on top of something
Taking 15 % of an amount is not the same as adding or removing that 15 %. Here the result is the part itself: 37,500. If what you want is the total with the percentage added, it has to be added to the amount, and if it is a reduction, subtracted.
Mixing up the two is behind most percentage mistakes, and it is the reason subtracting a percentage does not undo having added it.
The other direction: what percentage one amount is of another
When you have both amounts and want the percentage, divide the part by the total and multiply by a hundred: 37,500 over 250,000 is 0.15, which is 15 %.
It is how you read a commission, a surcharge, or how much weight a single cost carries inside a budget, and it is the same calculation written backwards.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I work out 15 % of 250,000 in my head?
- Find 1 % by moving the decimal two places: 2,500. Multiply by fifteen and you have 37,500. Splitting it into 10 % and 5 % works too: 25,000 plus 12,500.
- What percentage is one amount of another?
- Divide the part by the total and multiply by a hundred. 37,500 over 250,000 gives 0.15, which is 15 %.
- Can a percentage go above 100?
- Yes. A 150 % of an amount is one and a half times that amount. Percentages above a hundred turn up constantly in growth figures and surcharges.
