Work out overtime, night and Sunday premiums in Colombia with the 42-hour week and the 90 % Sunday premium in force since July 2026.
Every hour is paid on the value of an ordinary hour: the monthly salary divided by the hours in the month, 210 with the 42-hour week. Daytime overtime is worth 25 % more, night overtime 75 % more, an ordinary hour at night carries a 35 % premium and one on a Sunday or public holiday 90 % since 1 July 2026. Sunday premiums add up with the overtime and night ones.
The formulas that run, in order
- Value of an ordinary hour
valor_hora = salario / horas_mes - Daytime overtime
extra_diurna = horas_extra_diurnas * valor_hora * 1.25 - Night overtime
extra_nocturna = horas_extra_nocturnas * valor_hora * 1.75 - Night premium
recargo_nocturno = horas_nocturnas * valor_hora * 0.35 - Sundays and holidays
dominical = valor_hora * (horas_dominicales_diurnas * ((compensacion_dominical == "dinero" ? 1 : 0) + recargo_dominical / 100) + horas_dominicales_nocturnas * ((compensacion_dominical == "dinero" ? 1 : 0) + recargo_dominical / 100 + 0.35)) - Sunday and holiday overtime
extra_dominical = valor_hora * (horas_extra_dominicales_diurnas * (1.25 + recargo_dominical / 100) + horas_extra_dominicales_nocturnas * (1.75 + recargo_dominical / 100)) - Total on top of the salary
total_recargos = extra_diurna + extra_nocturna + recargo_nocturno + dominical + extra_dominical
Each formula reads what the earlier ones produced, by its name. The fields arrive with an example filled in: put your own numbers in and run it again.
What if the calculation were yours?
This calculator is not hand-written: it is an Axioma method, formulas that run one after another. Open it to see every step, adapt it to your case or run it for a whole payroll from a spreadsheet.
What each extra hour is worth on a 2 million salary
With the 42-hour week in force since 15 July 2026, a month has 210 ordinary hours: 7 a day for 30 days. On a salary of 2,000,000 pesos an ordinary hour is worth 9,523.81 pesos, and everything else follows from it: an hour of daytime overtime is worth 11,904.76 and one of night overtime 16,666.67.
Ten hours of daytime overtime, four at night, eight ordinary hours at night and an eight-hour Sunday paid in money come to 357,142.86 pesos in the month: 119,047.62 for daytime overtime, 66,666.67 for night overtime, 26,666.67 of night premium and 144,761.90 for the Sunday.
What the 2025 labour reform changed
Law 2466 of 2025 moved the start of the night to 7 p.m. from 25 December 2025; it used to start at 9 p.m. An ordinary hour between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. carries the 35 % night premium, which is not added to night overtime: that hour is already worth 75 % more.
The premium for working on a Sunday or public holiday rises in stages: 80 % from 1 July 2025, 90 % from 1 July 2026 and 100 % from 1 July 2027. A company may pay more sooner. That is why the percentage is a field: on 1 July 2027 it is enough to type 100.
Sundays and holidays: money or a day off
Someone who works an occasional Sunday, up to two in the month, chooses between being paid for it or taking a compensatory day off. Paid, the hour carries the 90 % premium, 1.9 times an ordinary hour; with the day off, only the premium is paid in money, because the free day pays the hour. For 8 hours that is 144,761.90 or 68,571.43 pesos.
Someone who works Sundays regularly, three or more in the month, gets full pay and the day off as well. Overtime on a Sunday adds both premiums: daytime Sunday overtime is worth 2.15 times an ordinary hour and night Sunday overtime 2.65 times.
Which divisor to use, and who is left out
No law sets how many hours the salary is divided by. Payroll practice uses 210 for a 42-hour week, as the Ministry of Labour’s 2023 unifying opinion did, but an opinion of the same ministry in March 2026 put it at 182 (42 × 52 / 12), which makes each hour dearer: 10,989.01 pesos on 2 million. The field takes either.
Managers and positions of trust have no overtime, though they do get night, Sunday and holiday premiums. An all-inclusive salary already makes up for all of it unless the contract says otherwise. And nobody may work more than 2 hours of overtime a day or 12 a week.
